My first hackathon

Hackathons are thrilling. Let’s talk about my first hackathon, Global Service Jam (GS Jam).

For those of you who are not aware, Global Service Jam is a 48-hour event held around the world where participants collaborate to design and prototype innovative solutions for one common theme. The air was filled with excitement and the theme was as clear as mud🫠, Build:re:build. Huh???? And the only hint we got to make some sense out of this cryptic theme was a short 1 min clip of random images which left us sharing confused smiles. This felt just like treasure hunt.

The day a cracked screen changed the world (Sort of)

My team, Jamadise (Hyderabad's "Paradise" reborn), started wracking our brains and throwing ideas leaft, right and onto the chart paper. Despite our diverse backgrounds – developers, analysts, designers, and a future entrepreneur in the making – Jamadise felt like a cohesive unit, united by a shared spirit of invention and a determination to crack the "Build:re:build" puzzle.

Coming up with good, doable idea was not as easy as we thought. We spent an entire day and still arrived nowhere. We all felt hopeless. But a crack in my friend's phone screen sparked an idea that just might change everything.

What if we made a service that sell and buys refurbished spare parts. We envisioned a platform where discarded phones wouldn’t be e-waste, but instead, a treasure house for spare parts.

Research shows that the global second-hand electronics industry was valued at $405.5 billion in 2022 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 13.6% from 2023 to 2031.

Idea to execution**: Our Business Model and the Right to Repair**

With the Right to repair movement already making noise in India, we shaped up our business model.

<aside> 🏗️ Imagine a marketplace where one person’s waste will become other person’s treasure. No more visits to shady alleys to get the best out of your items. Technicians can grab certified spare parts at a bargain instead of depending upon unreliable sources. And eco-concious folks can get refurbished items making it a win win for all.

Here’s how our C2B2C model will work:

Acquiring: Tell us about your item on our application. Get instant quotes and a pick-up slot. We’ll take it further from there. Our technicians will test your device and close the deal. It’s that simple.

There is a substantial market for the consumers who just want to sell their phones instead of exchanging. In OLX there are over 13000 posts to sell their phones, just in Hyderabad.
